Mānawatia Takatāpui/Defending Plurality: CENTRAL SPACE

Mānawatia Takatāpui/Defending Plurality is an expansive exhibition developed by Auckland-based artist and activist Shannon Novak. Taking a variety of forms across several galleries at Tauranga Art Gallery, as well as selected offsite venues, it foregrounds Novak’s unique dual role as both an acclaimed multi-disciplinary artist and a full-time advocate in the LGBTQI+ community. Assuming the role of both artist and curator, Novak’s exhibition is grounded in a large-scale floor-based installation and a series of distinct transformations of latent areas of Tauranga Art Gallery, each developed to subtly colour the experience of the exhibition.
